Dandora District Officer Andrew Kimani has refuted claims that people in Dandora Division are arming themselves with machete ahead of the March 4 General Elections. There had been claims that a Dandora trader (a supermarket owner) reported an unusual demand for pangas to a local government administrator. It was said that the trader feared that the weapons could be used to commit crime if the March 4 elections are disputed as it occurred in the 2007 General Elections.
However, in a text message to Dandora Today, Mr Kimani termed the allegations of high demand for pangas in Dandora as baseless incitements. "There is absolutely no basis for the reports that a trader talked to my office concerning an unprecedented purchase of pangas/machetes," he said.
He added, "These rumours are inciteful (sic) and meant to cause panic to the general public. I have talked to all traders dealing with these tools and they were actually shocked and denied such allegations.”
Dandora was one of the places that were hardest hit by the 2007/2008 Post Election Violence which saw so many people lose their lives and properties destroyed. Since his posting in Dandora as the area DO less than two years ago, Mr Kimani has been involved a many peace barazas urging peaceful co-existence among members of different communities in the division. He also asked the media and the people of Dandora to keep away from reports and debates that could ignite or fuel animosity.
